David Thorpe's New Documentary: Do I Sound Gay?

The film Do I Sound Gay? is a self-analysis of David Thorpe, who made the film over the past several years because he didn’t like the way he sounds; he grew to resent his “gay voice.” Thorpe sets out to change his voice and along the way he has a chance to speak to some really big hitters in the LGBT community. Activist Dan Savage lends his voice and advice along with actor George Takei, CNN host Don Lemon, comedienne Margaret Cho, and humorist/author David Sedaris. Thorpe spoke to Ian Maloney about why he made the film, the hard work he put into making it, and why he thinks the topic resonates with so many people. Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Bahia (Brazil)

The Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Bahia is Saturday, August 1 from 7 pm to 11 pm. Orkestra Rumpilezz is a bracing 20-piece big band from Bahia, Brazil. The band combines the percussive power of sacred Afro-Brazilian drumming with the beautiful brass sonorities, harmonic sweep and jolt of a jazz orchestra. It’s a big band informed by Gil Evans and the gods of Candomblé, featuring five percussionists, 14 brass and reeds – with a tuba, four trombones and baritone sax, they get a deep, soulful sound – and a Candomblé “drum master” who plays the tall wood hand drums called atabaques. The ensemble, which won the Brazilian Music Award for Best New Artist and Best Instrumental Group in 2010, is led by Letieres Leite, a composer, woodwind player and arranger who has worked with top Brazilian musicians like Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil and Elba Ramalho, and American jazz players such as Stanley Jordan. Opening set by Batuke Samba Funk. Free admission. Lawn seating. Bring a blanket or beach chair. More information: www.VisitHollywoodFL.org/events
