Actor Héctor Medina Talks New LGBT Cuban Film 'VIVA'

Coming off its fresh success as the darling of the 2015 Telluride Film Festival, the film "VIVA", produced and directed by a Cuban team and aided by an Irish production company, tells a fresh story about what it's like to live in the LGBT community in Havana, and the universal story of acceptance and love knowing no bounds -- especially when one feels like they have hit "rock bottom."

Jesus is the protagonist in "VIVA", played by Héctor Medina. He is a young hairdresser whose mother has died and his father left the family at a young age, meaning Jesus had to struggle to survive. We recently caught up with Hector to talk about his role: Actor  Héctor Medina Talks New LGBT Cuban Film 'VIVA'

Appeals Court Rules in Favor of Transgender Student's Rights

The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund is applauding this week’s historic ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit that under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, transgender students have the right to use school restrooms that correspond with their gender identity. The ruling could invalidate significant aspects of North Carolina’s HB2 law with regard to transgender people using bathrooms in educational institutions.  However, the ruling leaves the majority of the extremely controversial law in place.

“This historic ruling is an enormous victory for the advancement of equality for transgender people — especially as it further validates the fact that discrimination against transgender people is sex discrimination. In turn, it also makes the advent of 'bathroom police’ checking the IDs of everyone who use public restrooms less likely. The ruling could invalidate core aspects of the anti-trans bathroom measures contained in North Carolina’s HB2 and similar practices and measures in other states. However, with specific regard to North Carolina, the other pieces of HB2 would remain intact. For example, the ruling would not reverse the gutting of the state court discrimination process for currently protected classes. Nor would the ruling impact the statewide invalidation of protections for LGBTQ people, veterans, and other groups. And worker's wage protections that HB2 removed would not be reinstated. While this Appeals Court ruling is already creating positive change, the quickest and most thorough way to tackle the legalized discrimination and the stripping of rights contained in HB2 is to repeal it immediately and to pass strong state-wide non-discrimination and worker’s wage protection laws,” said Victoria M. Rodríguez-Roldán, J.D., Policy Counsel, Trans/Gender Non-Conforming Justice Project Director, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund.

Michael Longoria to Release 'Broadway Brick By Brick' May 6

Original “Jersey Boy” Michael Longoria is gearing up to release Broadway Brick By Brick on May 6th on Broadway Records. For Broadway Brick By Brick, Longoria has partnered with a dream team of musical greats, including Grammy winner John McDaniel (Patti LuPone), who music directed and arranged, Grammy winning producer Jeffrey Lesser (Barbra Streisand, Kristin Chenoweth), and orchestrator Jesse Vargas (Clay Aiken).  The release offers Broadway’s biggest songs, featuring Longoria’s soulful voice and incorporating his Latin roots.

Each song offers a snapshot of Longoria’s journey, starting with “Home” from The Wiz, where he starts his tale as a child, listening to his mother’s Mariachi music played on an old piano she bought from a priest in the 70s.  “Maria” from West Side Story sets the stage for his very first audition in high school. “The Impossible Dream” reflects his efforts to acknowledge his immigrant father’s wishes but to ultimately follow his own path, to New York and his dream of Broadway.

Longoria began his career as a Mariachi singer in his hometown of Los Angeles, before moving on to stage productions. At age 14 he was accepted to the prestigious Los Angeles County High School of The Arts, and then earned a scholarship to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He is best known for his portrayal of Frankie Valli in the acclaimed production of Jersey Boys. Longoria is currently performing in The Midtown Men, the subjects of two PBS specials including “Meet The Midtown Men.”
