On Friday
November 9th my good friend Alison Burgos (Ultra, Pandora, Aqua
Girl, Girls in Wonderland, etc) presented “Laugh Out Loud” with Comedian
and TV Star Suzanne Westenhoffer. Suzanne told stories
that left the audience in stitches. She worked mostly unscripted, and kept the
entire audience laughing for the entire 75 minutes. Then on Saturday
November 10, my friend DJ Miik invited a group of us (Miik,
Myself, DJ Bugie, Rolonda Garcia, Alyssa Kartiar, Latrice Royale, TP Lords,
Sushi, Juan, Maritza, and Yoel) to the Queen of Mean, America’s
favorite insult comic Lisa Lampanelli’s concert at the Fillmore
Theater (the old Jackie Gleason) in South Beach. With her two opening
comediennes the show lasted over two hours. Lisa was on it from the moment she
began to the moment she ended… she was on fire. I was laughing so hard I could
barely catch my breath. She was also gracious enough to sign autographs (and she
said she would sign anything) after the show. Two Great comediennes that I urge
everyone going to see the next time they are in town!!
Deco Drive Features Sidelines Sports Bar
They came, they
saw and they broadcast. In a programming first, Deco Drive, the
popular, trendy TV entertainment show aired a segment recently taped at
Sidelines Sports Bar on Monday night, October 22, at 7:30 PM
on WSVN Fox - Channel 7. For over three minutes viewers watched as
Lynn Martinez and Louis Aguirre, the show’s co-anchors, heralded the
already popular gay sports bar as an alternative and diverse venue for gay
sports fans. In a jam-packed bar teeming with football fans cheering at their
team’s performance, Deco Drive revealed to their viewers what the
owners of Sidelines already knew – “Sidelines is a bar unlike any other
around”. “But if you're thinking piano bars and drag queens, not that
there's anything wrong with that, think again”, reported Lynn Martinez. “Sidelines
is a home away from home field.” Producer John Hayden of Deco
Drive was pleased with the segment’s portrayal of gay life in South
Florida, as were the owners of Sidelines, Laurie Whittaker and Marty
Kildea. “This was beyond our wildest imagination”, remarked Kildea.
“To be Ft. Lauderdale’s first gay sports bar featured on television like this
was out of this world”, stated Whittaker. Sidelines Sports Bar, with its 16
flat-screen TVs, 3 pool tables, 3 dartboards, and other video games, continues
to provide a fun, friendly and comfortable environment for gay men and women who
enjoy all kinds of sports. Sidelines Sports Bar is located at 2031-A

National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force, Inc., Responds to House Passage of Non-Inclusive Employment
Non-Discrimination Act
“When
confronted with the possibility of Congress moving forward with a bill that
stripped out protections for transgender people, the activist and grassroots
backbone of our movement responded almost instantaneously in unprecedented
numbers with conviction, passion and political savvy. We are frustrated with
this course of action, but it will not stop us from pressing forward toward
our ultimate goal: nondiscrimination protections for everyone in our
community.”— Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force, Inc.
Following six
weeks of rancorous debate, the House of Representatives voted today on
a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that does not
include protections on the basis of gender identity. It passed by a vote of
235 to 184. When congressional leadership announced late last month that it
planned to advance a version of ENDA that only contained protections on the
basis of sexual orientation to the House floor, the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force, Inc., took a leading role in moving to block that strategy and
move forward on the fully inclusive bill.
A coalition called United ENDA
was created with more than 360 national, state and local organizations
joining the struggle. Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc. “We are deeply disappointed that
House leadership decided to ignore the position of a vast majority of LGBT
organizations, ignore the legal assessment that this bill may not even provide
adequate protections for gays, lesbians and bisexuals, and ignore the fact
that this vote might make it more difficult to persuade members of Congress to
support a fully inclusive bill in the future. We are also disappointed that
House leadership forced many members of its own caucus to choose between
voting for a bill not supported by most in the LGBT community, or voting
against a civil rights bill. This entire process has been painful, divisive
and unnecessary. And worst of all, we went through all of this on behalf of a
bill that the president has already said he would veto.”
The past six
weeks have been among the most difficult and challenging our community has
ever faced. When confronted with the possibility of Congress moving forward on
a bill that stripped out protections for transgender people, the activist and
grassroots backbone of our movement responded almost instantaneously in
unprecedented numbers with conviction, passion and political savvy. United ENDA — a broad coalition of more than 360 national, statewide and local LGBT
organizations, community centers and health clinics — fueled the effort. All
of this has shaken the long-established order to its core and things will
never be the same. While we are frustrated with the course of action that has
been taken so far, we will not stop pressing forward toward our ultimate goal:
nondiscrimination protections for everyone in our community. “We are
relieved this episode is behind us, and starting right now we are going to
pick up where we were six weeks ago — namely, working to pass into law in 2009
the ENDA our entire community wants and deserves.” We also applaud our
champions in Congress who courageously fought in committee, in their caucus
and on the floor to guarantee protections for all LGBT individuals. Many
members of Congress took significant risks to buck their leadership and speak
out in favor of an inclusive bill. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) fought to bring
an amendment to the floor to add gender identity protections. Reps. Rush Holt
(D-N.J.), Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Linda Sanchez
(D-Calif.) voted against the non-inclusive bill in the House Education and
Labor Committee. Seven members voted against the bill on the floor today on
the principle that the bill should have provided protections on the basis of
gender identity: Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), Rush Holt (D-N.J.), Michael
Michaud (D-Maine), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), Nydia
Velazquez (D-N.Y.) and Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.). The LGBT community will be
forever grateful for their passionate support.”
This week the spotlight focuses on the White Hot Leather

Thank You, Phoenix, for a Spectacular 31st
Annual Gay Softball World Series
During the week
of October 1-6, over 4,000 athletes, fans and volunteers from all across the
United States and Canada came to the US southwest city of Phoenix, Arizona for
Series 2007 – Feel the Fire, for the 31st annual Gay Softball
World Series (“GSWS”) hosted by the Cactus Cities Softball League.
This annual weeklong tournament crowned the champions in the eight divisions of
softball competition organized by the North American Gay Amateur Athletic
Alliance (NAGAAA). 2007 marks the first time that Phoenix has hosted the
GSWS. The Sheraton Crescent Hotel Phoenix was the primary host hotel of
Series 2007. Other host hotels included the Hilton Gardens Inn, the Hilton
Suites, the Embassy Suites Hotel, and the Country Inn & Suites
by Carlson. After a two-year absence as champs, the Atlanta Venom wore
the championship crown once again in the Open A Division at Series 2007. For
the Open B Division title—the Orlando Force were crowned as champions,
while in the Open C Division the Memphis Heat took top honors, and in the
Open D division, Atlanta’s Wet Demons took the title. Within the Women's
Division, Atlanta’s Riptide took first place honors in the A Division,
while in the Women's B Division, the host city’s Phoenix The Other Team
took top honors. The Seattle NW Connection were crowned champions in the
Women’s C Division, and another team from Seattle—the Lunachix—were the
Women’s D Division champions at Series 2007. In addition to the games, many
events were scheduled during the week of tournament play. One of the major
highlights was the annual Open Division Talent Show and Celebrity Item
Auction, held on Wednesday evening October 3rd at the Sheraton Crescent
Hotel. Prior year’s events raised thousands of dollars for local charities, and
this year was no exception. Approximately $6,000 was raised for two local
grassroots groups: the Kirk D. Baxter Wellness Center at Body Positive
and the Valley 1n10 Youth Services. This year’s event was attended by
hundreds of supporters who watched the fabulous talent acts and generously bid
on the many auction items. Once again, Jim “Bubba-D-Licious”Marks
served as emcee & host for the 14th year. A tournament of this size would not be
possible without the generous support of many sponsors, league members and
volunteers. Major corporate sponsors included Coors Light and
Aquafina—the two official NAGAAA sponsors for Series 2007. Additionally,
there were many local sponsors and donors, all of who made Series 2007 a great
success. A complete listing of these sponsors can be found on the main page of
the official website: www.Series2007.org.
In 1997, NAGAAA initiated a “Hall of Fame” to honor the achievements (both on
and off the playing field) of people and members in organized gay softball by
creating an historic perspective to perpetuate the history of gay softball and
the GSWS. This year in Phoenix, a total of ten men and women from both the Open
and Women’s Divisions were inducted into the NAGAAA Hall of fame.
Congratulations to all of this year’s Hall of Fame inductees. The 2008 NAGAAA
Gay Softball World Series will be held in Seattle Washington during the
week of August 25–30th. 2008 marks the second time that Seattle will
host the GSWS (the first time being in 1995). Your host in 2008 is the
Emerald City Softball Association. Preliminary information about
Series 2008 is now available at www.Series2008.org/gsws . For
information about the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance, please visit
their website at www.nagaaasoftball.org, or email them at Publicity@nagaaasoftball.org.

one appointment is necessary, scheduled about a month apart, in order to get
satisfactory results. The amount of collagen growth is not precisely

13th Annual Hurricane Showdown
Let’s face it;
when an occasion comes around to catch a glimpse of good-looking, athletic jocks
playing hard and looking for a fun time in Fort Lauderdale, one can not pass up
on welcoming them with open arms! This month’s most heralded competition; the
South Florida Amateur Athletic Association’s 13th Annual Hurricane Showdown
comes to Fort Lauderdale again with nearly 75 teams converging to compete in
this well-renowned gay softball tournament. The event draws players, coaches,
and fans from both coasts and everywhere in between. It is anticipated that over

and London will be flocking to Greater Fort Lauderdale to compete for awards,
honor and accolades. The Hurricane Showdown takes place from November 22 –
25. During the Thanksgiving Day weekend, there are many parties, games,
socializing, and friendly competition planned for the well-attended tournament.
The event kicks off with a High Heel Race at 5pm on Thursday with a cash
prize of $250.00 going to the winner. Their traditional Thanksgiving Day
Orphans Dinner will be served ....then stick around and enjoy the fun at the
annual Miss Hurricane Pageant, all at Georgie’s Alibi in Wilton Manors.
The games begin on Friday, November 23rd at Mills Pond Park at 3pm
and culminate with a taste of high-stepping, knee slapping country western
entertainment at our Host Bar Party at Scandals Saloon. Saturday’s
games continue at 8am at Mills Pond Park and Brian Piccolo Park finishing the
day off with all the excitement sports can bring at their Host Bar Party,
sponsored by the popular Sidelines Sports Bar. On Sunday, the games
continue at Mills Pond Park with teams vying for Championship honors and the
year’s bragging rights. The closing banquet begins at 5pm with the awards
presentation at 7pm followed by, the Hurricane Extravaganza, all at

Community Potluck
The GLCC will once again host a community potluck on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22. The event is free and open to the community.
Guests may bring a potluck dish but it is not mandatory. Once again this year,
they have been very fortunate to receive covered dishes donated by the Church
of the Holy SpiritSong (COHSS) that include: turkey, cranberry sauce, rolls,
gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes and veggies. The Holiday Meal will be served
from 12 noon
to 2:00 pm.
"COHSS meets at the Center weekly on Sunday mornings at 10am
and we are very grateful for their generous donation,"
stated Paul Hyman, Executive Director of the GLCC. "We
are pleased to be able to provide this service to the community, if you are
interested in volunteering please contact me at phyman@glccsf.org and plan on
arriving at 11am to setup and serve. Thank you!"
Kick Off The Annual

The GLCC will launch its 2007
TOY DRIVE on Thanksgiving Day and will start collecting new
unwrapped toys through Christmas Week. Please shop for the children, and feel
free to drop off a toy anytime Monday through Friday 10am-10pm or Saturday and
Sunday 12pm-5pm.

ourselves, but we can still help those in need."
Stonewall Heritage Award
Stonewall Library & Archives is pleased to announce that the 2007
recipients of the prestigious Stonewall Heritage Award will be Barbara
Gittings and Kay Tobin Lahusen. The Heritage Gala, during which the
awards will be presented, will be held in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday,
November 17, and will include cocktails, a silent auction, a seated buffet,
dancing, and a small exhibition devoted to the truly extraordinary achievements
of this year's honorees. Proceeds from the event will support the programs and
activities of Stonewall Library & Archives, the largest circulating LGBT library
in the United States. Barbara Gittings, along with her life partner Kay Tobin
Lahusen, established the East Coast chapter of the first lesbian organization in
the United States, the Daughters of Bilitis, and was the editor of its
associated publication THE LADDER. Kay Lahusen's photos of gay women for
the magazine's covers were groundbreaking achievements and proclaimed a victory
over the pervasive gay invisibility of the time. Barbara was also a charter
member of the board of directors of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
and the Gay Rights National Lobby, forerunner of the Human Rights
Campaign, and she worked tirelessly within the American Library Association
to make materials with LGBT content more accessible to the reading public.
Joining with activist Frank Kameny, honored at Stonewall's 2006 Heritage
Gala, Gittings and Lahusen were also instrumental in having homosexuality
removed from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders in
1973. Gittings, who was interviewed by Philadelphia newspapers on that occasion,
wryly recalled "a wonderful headline"-"20 Million Homosexuals Gain Instant
Cure." Tickets for The Heritage Gala 2007 on sale
