Sex And The City Reviewed by Stephen R. Lang |

The long-awaited full-screen version of the cult icon television show Sex And The City picks up four years later and gives you the best two and a half hour emotional rollercoaster journey of your life. As the story goes, it’s four single girls struggling to survive the toils and tribulations of living in one of the best cities in the world—New York. The series focused around flighty introspective writer Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), PR sex-cougar Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrell), WASPy perfectionist Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and control freak lawyer Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon). As the series progressed you saw relationships bloom and crash, morals questioned, and did I forget to mention the Label Dropping? Carrie says that when girls come to The City they are looking for the Two L’s: Labels and Love.
The movie takes place four years after the series ended, and in the beginning spends a wonderful ten minutes recapping what happened since the end of the TV series. Carrie was now working for Vogue and living with the illusive Big (Chris Noth), Samantha had become the personal PR workhorse for her Waiter/Actor she discovered and is now a mega star and together the live in un-married bliss in Los Angeles, while happy couple Charlotte and husband have adopted a daughter, Lilly, and now live on Park Avenue and Miranda and Steve have Brady in Brooklyn. The three remaining New York girls still have lunch and do things together and not surprisingly, Samantha makes it back for what seems like every possible chance available. What is the gay appeal to this movie? The obvious answer would be in the opening sequence when all four girls are walking down the street checking out this approaching hot guy, only for him to walk right past them and kiss another guy while they laugh and chalk it up to the “The good ones already have boyfriends.” Eye candy bonus would be Samantha’s next door neighbor Dante (Gilles Marini) who is what some say would be the equivalent of Samantha herself as a man five year prior. Don’t forget to check out Carrie’s Asian interviewee and Jennifer Hudson playing her Personal Assistant Louise! There is not a lot you can say from the movie that will not give things away but there’s an amazing Vivian Westwood wedding dress, BCBG belt worn by three of the girls, Minalo Blaniks, and a custom-made walk-in closet with views that will make you want to camp out on a shays lounge with a book and thank God you have it so good. They all start out wonderful but, just like the show and every Disney ride, it takes you on a journey upward and downward a few times but leaves you gasping for air with tears of joy. There is immense joy and pain, love and loss, jewelry and fashion, resentment and forgiveness, and misunderstandings all worthy of a screen-worthy performance from the girls of the iconic Sex and the City.
