Alter Boyz is N’Sync meets Jesus and will “Alter Your Mind.” As part of their Raise the Praise ’06 Tour, the boys of Alter Boyz have graced the Fort Lauderdale Parker Playhouse Theater with their presence. I will have to admit, as a Child of the 80’s and a survivor of the Boy Band Generation; I literally, could not stop smiling.
This is not a musical for the Pagans, unless they have a sense of humor, and yet, on the flip side, this is not a Bible-thumping musical either. This is a mock concert you are attending, with all the flare, synchronized movements and attitudes of their not-so-far off pop-counterparts. There are five guys, get this, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham—he’s Jewish! All five members have heard their callings, from God himself, to go out and spread the word. The hottest, Mark, is the Leader, (played by Matthew Buckner) with all the mature animal magnetism of Nick Lachey. Mark, (played by Ryan J. Ratliff), is the gayest of them all, belongs on Another Gay Movie and is hysterical and completely empethetical in his pursuit of Matthew. Luke, (played by Jesse JP Johnson), is the ghetto-Bad Boy Rapper with the hat tilted just off-skew enough to show that he didn’t take his SATs and Juan, (played by Jay Garcia) is the Latino Lover of the bunch, giving certain girls in the crowd a warm feeling—for God! Last, but not least, and most unique to the group is Abraham, (played by Nick Blaemire) who, even though he is a Jew, is to be part of an elite Boy Band group to Raise the Praise for God (voice by Shadoe Stevens!) As the concert progresses, you see different aspects of the boys through their musical solos. With Matthew it is a commanding God Put the Rhythm in Me. Mark’s is a touching, almost confessional ballad, I’m a Catholic, that makes you not ashamed of the Rosary in your nightstand. Abraham admits, You Make Me Want To Wait. And after hearing bad news, Juan can barely get through La Vida Eternal. But the funniest would be Luke’s Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone. He will make you start singing things like, Gettin down with da word of da Lord and Mary’s Mag-delicious! By the end of this concert, you will Believe. This is a musical that is for everyone—as long as you can laugh at yourself as well. The Alter Boyz all played synchronized parts to the Tee, and even if you have to take a break because you suffer from “exhaustion”, you are reminded that everybody fits into God’s family and you never know when divine inspiration might hit.
